When it’s time for your child’s checkup, their pediatric dentist may recommend dental sealants. This is a common treatment for children, but if you don’t know much about it, you may be skeptical about letting your child get it. Thankfully, it’s an easy process that can be helpful toward their oral health! Keep reading to learn the answers to four questions that parents have.
1.) What are Dental Sealants?
Also known as preventive resin restorations, this is a protective measure that helps lessen the risk of tooth decay. It’s a coating that’s applied to the molars (where most decay is found). This barrier helps prevent acid-producing bacteria, plaque, and food from leading to cavities and harming your little one’s oral health.
If you are worried about the look of your child’s smile with sealants, you can rest assured that they aren’t obvious. Many dentists opt for a transparent material, so growing smiles stay looking beautiful.
2.) Is It Painful to Get Dental Sealants?
The good news is that getting dental sealants is both simple and pain-free. Your child’s pediatric dentist will start by cleaning the teeth that are getting the treatment. An acidic gel is applied for several seconds to help make the surface a bit rougher, allowing for better adherence. Next, the teeth are rinsed and dried before applying the sealant material. It’s then bonded and hardened with a special light. That’s it! Your child is even able to eat right after.
3.) How Long Will My Child’s Dental Sealants Last?
Dental sealants are designed to be durable as they are placed on teeth that are used for chewing. They can take a lot of pressure and can last up to a decade! This is true with proper care and with consistent checkups. Thankfully, if they do wear down or break, then reapplying the sealants or replacing them is as easy as the first time.
4.) Why Are Dental Sealants Common for Kids?
The molars are often a little harder for kids to fully clean. The deep grooves can trap food, letting bacteria build up and cause problems. By applying a sealant over these teeth, it lowers the risk of cavities. However, children aren’t the only ones who can benefit from this treatment. Many teenagers and adults get it as well!
While dental sealants may have been a mystery beforehand, learning more about them can help you feel more confident about your child’s oral health. Their pediatric dentist will be happy to answer any other questions or concerns that you have!
