Pediatric dentists are dedicated to protecting and maintaining your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth from infancy to adulthood. However, it wasn’t always a focus. That being said, now that pediatric dentistry is available, there’s nothing better for your child’s smile. Here’s all about the history of pediatric dentistry and why your child should see a specialist to better protect their oral health.

The History of Pediatric Dentistry

Dentistry has existed in some form since 5000 BC. However, the origins of pediatric dentistry can only be traced back to the 20th century. In 1913, Dr. Alfred C. Fones opened a clinic for dental hygienists and sent students into public schools to clean children’s teeth. Around the same time, dental assistant Minnie Evangeline Jordon created the first-ever dental practice just for kids.

In the 1940s, the American Dental Association (ADA) officially recognized pediatric dentistry as a specialization aspiring dentists could pursue. This led to a rise in awareness of children’s dental hygiene and caused an increase in about 50% of kids going to the dentist once a year. In 1947, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) was founded. A decade or so later, the Pediatric Dentistry Training Program was founded to train dentists on how to care for children with special needs.

Although fluoride awareness increased, many children still struggled with tooth decay. A national report was released regarding the correlation between children’s oral and overall health. At the turn of the 21st century, the ADA began pushing comprehensive oral healthcare for children starting before they’re a year old.

Today, oral hygiene is more effective and affordable than it has ever been. Pediatric dental services are offered to anyone 19 and younger. More than 86% of children visit the dentist at least once a year. Protecting and maintaining children’s smiles is a nationwide priority.

How Seeing a Pediatric Dentist Benefits Your Child’s Smile

Pediatric dentists have the proper experience and qualifications to care for a child’s oral health, regardless of what stage of childhood they are at. They undergo 4 years of dental school and 2 years of additional residency training for infants, children, teens, and children with special needs.

Their care is specific to your child’s smile – their equipment is specially made for children and their office is decorated with bright colors and toys! Pediatric dentists provide comprehensive oral healthcare, including:

  • Infant oral exams
  • Preventive dental care
  • Habit counseling
  • Early assessment and treatment for teeth and bite alignment
  • Repair of cavities and tooth defects
  • Diagnosis of oral conditions associated with other health issues
  • Management of gum diseases and conditions
  • Care for dental injuries

Children are not small adults – they have different habits and lifestyles, and their mouths are still growing. Your child’s pediatric dentist will ensure your child has a comfortable experience at their appointment and work together with them to keep them smiling widely for years to come.
